What is a productive project?

It is a project that creates employment and generates income. Examples include: agricultural cooperatives, youth training programs or alternative tourism. The projects should rely heavily on entrepreneurship, access to capital, competitiveness and technological edge.

To be considered for funding, the projects must have the following two components:

  • A community focus with income and employment generation as a primary objective.

  • Financial or knowledge transfer support from U.S.-based organizations or individuals from the country of origin.

What organizations are eligible?

  • Nonprofits such as NGOs, community organizations, business associations, cooperatives, technical training organizations, local organizations supported by immigrant associations.

  • Organizations with sufficient capacity to implement projects at grant levels between $50,000 and $250,000 over two to three years.

  • Groups of organizations united to implement a project as long as one of the organizations is the designated leader.

What activities are eligible?

A range of activities fall under the definition of productive projects, however all projects must also have a transnational element, such as:

  • Community groups in the participating countries that partner with diaspora organizations such as hometown associations, sports clubs, cultural clubs, local communities or other emigrant associations;

  • Small-scale producers, and cottage industries that export to new markets, including diaspora markets;

  • Human capital investment, such as volunteerism, by diaspora organizations;

  • Remittance of financial resources, new skills, ideas or practices;

  • Initiatives in communities with significant out-migration

How will the program work?

In total we expect to fund about 33 projects across the six participating countries, at levels between $50,000 and $250,000 over two to three years. In each country the selection of projects will be made by a site committee consisting of representatives from the local funding partners, HIP and the MIF.
